Project Overview

The project involved a standard HDB residential unit where two built‑in bedframes, each integrated with timber bulkheads, needed to be removed to make way for new service routing. Our team was tasked with the complete dismantling and safe disposal of the bedframe structures, followed by the supply and installation of PVC trunking to accommodate future electrical and data cabling. Working within the tight confines of a typical Singapore HDB flat, we executed the demolition with minimal disturbance to adjacent units and maintained the integrity of the surrounding walls and ceiling.

Technical Challenges

  1. Integrated Bulkhead Construction – The bedframes were not freestanding; they were anchored to custom timber bulkheads that extended from floor to ceiling. Removing these required careful cutting and prying to avoid damaging the underlying plasterboard and the structural ceiling joists.
  2. Limited Access and Working Height – HDB flats have narrow corridors and low ceiling clearances. Positioning demolition tools and extracting the bulkhead sections without causing impact to neighboring walls demanded precise staging and the use of low‑profile equipment.
  3. Dust and Debris Containment – Even though the demolition was confined to the bedroom area, the removal of timber and plaster generated fine particles. Containing dust within the work zone while still providing ventilation for the crew was a critical concern.
  4. Coordination for Trunking Installation – The PVC trunking had to follow a clean, straight chase that intersected both the ceiling‑wall junction and the wall beneath a window. Ensuring the newly created openings were perfectly squared and free of splinters was essential for a seamless trunking fit.

Project Considerations

  • Protection of Non‑Demolition Areas – We laid protective sheeting over adjacent walls, door frames, and the window sill before any hacking began. This prevented accidental scratches and kept the living spaces of the occupants intact.
  • Neighbour‑Unit Minimisation – All work was scheduled during agreed daytime hours, and we employed dust‑extractor units with HEPA filters to keep airborne particles from migrating to neighbouring flats.
  • Safety and Structural Integrity – Prior to cutting, we verified the load‑bearing status of the bulkheads with on‑site inspection. Temporary supports were installed where necessary to ensure the ceiling remained stable throughout the removal process.
  • Clear Communication – Progress updates, including before‑and‑after photos and daily check‑ins, were shared with the homeowner and interior designer via WhatsApp, ensuring transparency and quick decision‑making.
  • Efficient Disposal – All dismantled timber, plaster, and packaging waste were sorted on‑site and removed in sealed containers, complying with HDB waste‑management guidelines and keeping the common corridor clear.

Results

The two bedframe–bulkhead assemblies were fully dismantled and removed without leaving any damage to the surrounding structure. The newly installed PVC trunking runs cleanly along the ceiling‑wall interface and beneath the window, ready for future electrical and data services. The floor was left spotless, with all demolition debris responsibly disposed of, and the room’s walls and ceiling returned to a pristine condition.

Our disciplined approach to protection, dust control, and meticulous housekeeping resulted in zero complaints from neighbouring units and a smooth handover to the interior design team. The homeowner expressed confidence in the quality of our workmanship and appreciated the transparent communication throughout the project. By delivering the General Dismantling & Disposal Services on schedule and to a high standard, we reinforced HackingSG’s reputation for reliable, resident‑focused renovations in Singapore’s HDB environment.
