Project Overview

The client, an owner of a Singapore HDB flat, engaged us to completely remove the existing kitchen cabinetry to make way for a modern redesign. The scope was focused on the top and bottom kitchen cabinets along the primary wall run and a side cabinet that extended into the corner space. Our team arrived on‑site equipped to safely dismantle the built‑in carpentry, extract all cabinet components, and clear the work area while preserving the surrounding finishes and the integrity of adjacent units.

Technical Challenges

Challenge How We Addressed It
Limited access in a typical HDB kitchen – The narrow layout and low ceiling clearance left little room for large tools and equipment. We used compact, hand‑driven demolition tools and a step‑ladder system that allowed us to work efficiently from the floor without crowding the space.
Embedded services behind the cabinets – Electrical sockets, lighting fixtures, and plumbing ran directly behind the upper and lower cabinets. Prior to any removal, we carefully exposed and documented each service point, disconnecting only what was necessary and protecting live circuits with insulated covers.
Preserving the tiled backsplash and wall finishes – The client wanted the existing backsplash to remain intact for reuse in the new design. Cabinet fastenings were systematically unscrewed and pried away, minimizing impact on the tiles. Where small chips occurred, we performed spot repairs to keep the wall surface clean for the next phase.
Dust and debris containment in a high‑rise building – HDB regulations require strict control of dust to avoid affecting neighbours. We deployed plastic sheeting and a localized vacuum extraction unit that captured particulate matter at the source, keeping the rest of the flat and the corridor free from contamination.

Project Considerations

  • Protection of non‑demolition zones – All countertops, appliances, and flooring that were not part of the demolition were covered with drop cloths and sealed edges to prevent accidental scratches or spills.
  • Neighbour‑unit disturbance minimization – Work hours were coordinated with the building management, and we used low‑impact hand tools during the early morning to keep noise levels within acceptable limits.
  • Clear communication – Throughout the demolition, we maintained a real‑time WhatsApp group with the homeowner and the interior designer, sharing progress photos and confirming each step before proceeding to the next cabinet section.
  • Safety compliance – Personal protective equipment (PPE) was mandatory for all crew members, and we adhered to HDB safety guidelines for structural modifications, even though the work was limited to cabinetry.

Results

The cabinet dismantling was completed ahead of schedule, and the site was left spotless, with all debris removed and the protective barriers taken down. The exposed wall and backsplash are now ready for the forthcoming renovation works, and the client expressed confidence in the quality of the removal—particularly appreciating the careful handling of the existing tiles and the minimal dust impact on neighboring units.

By delivering precise built‑in carpentry removal, meticulous protection of surrounding finishes, and proactive communication, we reinforced HackingSG’s reputation for excellence in residential HDB projects. The successful execution of this demolition phase set a solid foundation for the client’s new kitchen design, ensuring a smooth transition to the next stage of the renovation.
