Project Overview

The client, an owner of an HDB flat in Singapore, sought a precise removal of a small partition wall that separated the bathroom from an adjacent wet‑area, together with the built‑in basin that sat directly beside it. The goal was to open up the layout for a more contemporary design while preserving the integrity of the surrounding bathroom and kitchen finishes.

We were engaged to carry out Wall Hacking Services and General Dismantling & Disposal Services. Our team carefully exposed the partition, removed the adjoining basin, and cleared all debris, delivering a clean, ready‑to‑re‑fit space that aligned with the homeowner’s vision and the strict regulations governing HDB renovations.

Technical Challenges

  1. Confined Working Envelope
The partition and basin are situated in a compact bathroom/kitchen wet area typical of HDB flats. Working within such tight dimensions required meticulous planning of tool placement and material handling to avoid damage to adjacent tiled walls and fixtures.

  2. Protection of Existing Finishes
The surrounding walls, floor tiles, and built‑in cabinetry had to remain untouched. We needed to prevent accidental chipping of tiles, scratching of painted surfaces, and any impact on the plumbing that serves the rest of the unit.

  3. Plumbing Disconnection and Re‑routing
The basin’s supply and waste lines were integrated into the partition wall. Safely isolating these services without compromising the building’s water‑tightness demanded precise cutting, capping, and temporary sealing of the exposed pipework.

  4. Dust Containment in a High‑Traffic Residential Block
HDB units share common ventilation shafts and corridors. Controlling demolition dust and debris was essential to prevent cross‑contamination of neighbouring units and to meet the building’s health‑safety standards.

Project Considerations

  • Neighbour‑Unit Minimisation
We coordinated demolition timing with the homeowner and used low‑impact hand tools where possible to reduce vibration and noise, thereby limiting disturbance to adjacent occupants.

  • Protective Barriers & Coverings
Prior to hacking, we installed temporary protective sheeting on all non‑demolition surfaces. Edge guards and floor protectors were positioned to shield tiles and cabinetry from accidental impact.

  • Dust Extraction & Containment
Portable dust extractors equipped with HEPA filters were positioned directly at the hacking point. All debris was collected in sealed containers for prompt disposal, ensuring the work zone remained tidy throughout the process.

  • Clear Communication
Progress updates, photographs of each stage, and any adjustments to the scope were shared instantly via WhatsApp with the homeowner and the interior designer, guaranteeing transparency and swift decision‑making.

  • Compliance with HDB Regulations
All structural modifications were reviewed against HDB’s renovation guidelines. We ensured that the removal of the partition did not affect load‑bearing elements and that all plumbing alterations complied with the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) standards.

Results

The partition wall and adjoining basin were successfully hacked out and fully removed, leaving a seamless opening that aligns with the new interior layout. All demolished material was responsibly disposed of, and the site was left spotless, with no dust residue on surrounding tiles or fixtures.

Key outcomes include:

  • High‑Quality Craftsmanship – The wall hacking was executed with clean cuts and smooth edges, ready for the next phase of construction without the need for additional patch‑up work.
  • Timely Completion – The targeted demolition was finished within the agreed schedule, allowing the client to progress to subsequent fit‑out works without delay.
  • Client Satisfaction – The homeowner praised the minimal disruption to daily living, the professionalism of the crew, and the clear communication throughout the project.
  • Enhanced Living Space – By removing the partition and basin, the flat now enjoys a more open, flexible wet‑area layout, setting the stage for a modern redesign that maximises the limited HDB floorplan.

At HackingSG, we take pride in delivering precise, low‑impact demolition solutions that respect the unique constraints of Singapore’s residential environment while exceeding client expectations.
