Project Overview

The client, an owner of a typical HDB flat in Singapore, engaged us to refresh the main living‑dining space by addressing the ageing cove ceiling and its adjoining wall junction. The brief was straightforward yet critical: hack the existing false ceiling and wall cornice, repair the exposed areas, and deliver a seamless painted finish that would restore the room’s original elegance while meeting the high‑density living standards of HDB flats.

Our team at HackingSG mobilised with the specialised tools and expertise required for false‑ceiling and cornice hacking. After carefully removing the compromised sections, we executed meticulous plastering and surface preparation, followed by a high‑quality paint and touch‑up regime. The result is a uniformly smooth ceiling line, crisp cornice profile, and a fresh, clean appearance that blends seamlessly with the surrounding interior.

Technical Challenges

  1. Limited Access in a High‑Rise HDB Unit
The living area featured two tall window openings and a modest ceiling height, restricting the space available for scaffolding and equipment. We employed low‑profile step platforms and extended‑reach tools to reach the cove line safely without encroaching on the window areas or disturbing neighbouring units.

  2. Preserving Existing Services
During the hacking phase, electrical cables and pendant lighting fixtures were exposed. The challenge was to protect these services while removing the false ceiling, then reintegrate them cleanly after plastering. Our electricians coordinated closely with the demolition crew, securing all wiring and re‑terminating connections only after the new plaster cured, ensuring compliance with Singapore’s wiring standards.

  3. Achieving a Seamless Cornice Transition
The original cove ceiling had an irregular, weathered profile. Replicating a straight, continuous cornice line required precise measurement and careful plaster application to match the existing wall‑to‑ceiling junction. Multiple thin‑coat layers were applied and sanded to eliminate any visible seams, delivering a flawless transition that meets the aesthetic expectations of HDB interiors.

  4. Dust Containment in a Fully Furnished Space
HDB flats are typically occupied during renovations, and the client’s furniture needed protection. We implemented a full‑floor plastic sheeting system, sealed the work perimeter with taped edges, and used dust‑extraction units to capture airborne particles. This approach prevented cross‑contamination of adjacent rooms and maintained indoor air quality throughout the project.

Project Considerations

  • Neighbour‑Unit Sensitivity – Given the proximity of adjoining flats, we scheduled noisy demolition tasks during agreed daytime windows and communicated daily progress updates via WhatsApp, keeping the homeowner and interior designer fully informed.

  • Safety & Compliance – All hacking work complied with Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) regulations. Protective coverings were installed over windows, doors, and furniture, and all personnel wore appropriate PPE.

  • Surface Preparation for Painting – After plastering, we conducted a thorough surface inspection, filling any micro‑imperfections and applying a primer coat to ensure optimal paint adhesion. The final touch‑up used low‑VOC, HDB‑approved paint to guarantee a healthy living environment.

  • Client‑Specific Aesthetic Requests – The homeowner requested a subtle matte finish that would complement the existing colour palette of the flat. Our paint specialists mixed the precise shade and applied a uniform coat, delivering the exact look the client envisioned.

Results

  • Flawless Ceiling & Cornice Finish – The hacked cove ceiling has been rebuilt with a perfectly straight cornice line, eliminating the previous irregularities and delivering a contemporary, clean look.

  • Pristine Paint Work – The general painting and touch‑up service produced an even, streak‑free surface that enhances the room’s brightness and visual continuity.

  • Minimal Disruption – Through diligent dust control, protective sheeting, and clear communication, the renovation was completed without affecting neighbouring units or compromising the client’s daily routine.

  • Client Satisfaction – The homeowner praised the professionalism of the crew, the quality of the workmanship, and the timely delivery. The refreshed
