Project Overview

The client, an HDB homeowner, sought a clean and efficient removal of an existing TV feature wall that occupied the living‑room focal point. The wall comprised a built‑in TV bay, surrounding cabinetry, and integrated service conduits. Our team was tasked with dismantling the entire built‑in structure, safely extracting all cabinetry, panels, and wiring, and preparing the space for a fresh interior layout. Leveraging our specialised expertise in built‑in carpentry and cabinet removal, we executed a precise demolition that respected the tight constraints of an HDB unit while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding living area.

Technical Challenges

  1. Limited Access and Tight Clearances – HDB flats typically have narrow corridors and modest ceiling heights. Removing the multi‑layered feature wall required careful sequencing to extract large panels through confined doorways without damaging adjacent walls or fixtures.
  2. Integrated Service Routing – The TV bay housed power, AV, and speaker cables that were routed behind the cabinetry and within the wall cavity. Isolating and disconnecting these services without compromising the building’s electrical safety demanded meticulous coordination with the client’s electrician and precise labeling of each conduit.
  3. Structural Integrity of the Built‑In – The feature wall was anchored to the structural wall and floor. Dismantling it required us to identify load‑bearing points, progressively release fastenings, and support the remaining sections to prevent any unintended movement that could affect the surrounding structure.
  4. Dust and Debris Containment – Demolition of plasterboard, cabinetry, and backing boards generates fine dust that can travel to neighbouring units. Implementing effective dust‑control measures within a residential setting was essential to meet HDB regulations and safeguard the client’s living environment.

Project Considerations

  • Protection of Non‑Demolition Areas – We applied heavy‑duty protective sheeting and taped edge barriers around the work zone, ensuring that floors, doors, and adjacent walls remained free from scratches, chips, or stray debris.
  • Neighbour‑Unit Minimisation – All removal work was scheduled during agreed daytime hours, and we employed low‑impact hand tools where possible to reduce vibration and noise that could disturb neighbouring residents.
  • Dust Control Strategy – Prior to any hacking, we laid down sealed dust sheets across the entire floor area, secured them with painter’s tape, and used portable extraction units to capture airborne particles. This approach kept the living room clean and prevented dust migration through ventilation shafts.
  • Clear Communication – Throughout the demolition, we maintained real‑time updates via WhatsApp, sharing progress photos and confirming each step with the homeowner and interior designer. This transparency ensured that any emerging concerns were addressed promptly, and the client remained confident in the project’s direction.
  • Safety Compliance – All work adhered to HDB safety guidelines, including proper PPE for our crew, safe handling of electrical components, and systematic disposal of removed materials in accordance with local regulations.

Results

The TV feature wall was fully dismantled, leaving a pristine, open wall surface ready for the client’s new design concept. All cabinetry, panels, and service wiring were removed cleanly, with no damage to the surrounding structure. Our dust‑control and protection measures resulted in a spotless living room, eliminating the need for post‑demolition cleaning by the homeowner. The project was completed on schedule, and the client expressed high satisfaction with the professionalism, communication, and quality of workmanship. By efficiently removing the built‑in carpentry, we enabled the homeowner to re‑imagine the living space, ultimately enhancing the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the HDB unit.
