Project Overview

The client owned a mid‑rise HDB flat that required a full interior reset before the next phase of renovation could begin. The brief called for the complete dismantling and removal of built‑in kitchen cabinetry, wall‑mounted fixtures, and associated trim, followed by a fresh paint finish and touch‑up work to restore the surrounding walls to a pristine condition.

Our team at HackingSG entered the unit with a clear plan: strip away all built‑in carpentry, protect the remaining finishes, and deliver a clean, primed surface ready for the designer’s next steps. By coordinating closely with the homeowner and the interior designer through daily WhatsApp updates, we kept the project transparent and on schedule, while adhering to our strict residential demolition standards.

Technical Challenges

  1. Tight Spatial Constraints and Integrated Fixtures
The kitchen cabinets and wall‑mounted air‑conditioning unit were tightly integrated into the wall envelope. Removing these elements without damaging the surrounding plaster, electrical sockets, or structural framing required meticulous sequencing and selective dismantling techniques.

  2. Dust and Debris Management in a High‑Rise Environment
Floor tile hacking and wall stripping generate significant particulate matter. In a dense residential block, uncontrolled dust can affect neighbouring units. We had to devise localized containment zones, employ dust‑sucking equipment, and use protective sheeting only where needed to keep the work area clean while avoiding a full‑room enclosure that would impede progress.

  3. Protection of Existing Finishes and Services
The unit contained operational services—air‑con, power outlets, and plumbing—that needed to remain functional throughout the demolition. Safeguarding these fixtures while extracting the built‑in carpentry demanded custom protective covers and careful patching of the wall substrate before repainting.

  4. Ensuring Structural Integrity During Wall Hacking
Selective wall hacking was required to expose the substrate for painting and to accommodate the removal of cabinetry. Identifying load‑bearing elements and preserving them while eliminating non‑structural sections required close collaboration with structural consultants and precise hand‑tool work.

Project Considerations

  • Neighbour‑Unit Minimisation – We scheduled noisy activities during agreed windows and installed temporary floor protection to prevent vibrations from traveling to adjacent flats.
  • Dust Containment – Plastic curtains were hung around window openings and doorways, and a semi‑organic containment bag was positioned at the most active zone to collect debris. This approach balanced effective dust control with easy access for our crew.
  • Safety & Service Continuity – All electrical sockets and the wall‑mounted AC unit were masked and sealed before any demolition began. Loose cables were routed safely, and a clear demarcation line was painted on the walls to define the demolition perimeter.
  • Communication & Documentation – Progress photos and daily status reports were shared instantly via WhatsApp, allowing the homeowner and designer to approve each stage before moving forward. This transparent
