Project Overview

The client, an owner of a Singapore HDB flat, engaged us to clear a sizable kitchen‑dining zone that was dominated by a full‑height built‑in cabinet system and an existing dining table. The brief was straightforward: remove the entire cabinet bay—including glass‑front display sections, multiple internal shelves, and fitted compartments—and dismantle the table, then dispose of all debris in a clean, orderly manner.

Technical Challenges

Restricted Access in a High‑Rise HDB Unit
The full‑height cabinet spanned the entire height of the wall, leaving only a narrow corridor for tools and waste removal. We had to sequence the dismantling so that each shelf and panel could be extracted without blocking the doorway or creating bottlenecks that would impede the flow of materials out of the flat.
Preservation of Existing Finishes
The cabinets were fitted flush against painted walls and tiled floors. Any aggressive force could have chipped paint, cracked tiles, or damaged the electrical boxes that remained behind the cabinet line. Our carpentry crew used precision hand tools and protective padding to separate the cabinet carcass from the substrate, ensuring the underlying finishes stayed intact.
Heavy, Bulky Components
The cabinet’s glass panels, solid‑wood doors, and the dining table each presented significant weight and fragility. Coordinating safe lifts, securing glass to prevent breakage, and manoeuvring the table through the hallway required careful planning and the use of specialised lifting straps and padded rollers.
Dust and Debris Containment in a Shared Building
Even though the scope did not involve wall or tile hacking, the demolition of large joinery generates fine dust and wood particles. In a densely populated block, uncontrolled dust would affect neighbouring flats. We therefore employed a temporary metal mesh barrier, sealed the work zone, and performed frequent vacuuming to keep airborne particles to a minimum.

Project Considerations

Safety First – All team members wore PPE appropriate for carpentry demolition (gloves, safety glasses, steel‑toe boots). The metal mesh barrier served as a physical safeguard for occupants and passers‑by, preventing inadvertent entry into the demolition zone.
Protection of Adjacent Areas – Floor runners and corner protectors were laid before any component was lifted, shielding the finished tiles from scratches or dropped hardware. Wall edges were padded to avoid accidental gouging while the cabinet frames were pried away.
Neighbour‑Friendly Execution – We coordinated work hours with the building management to minimise noise during peak times. Waste removal trucks were scheduled for off‑peak periods, and all debris was loaded and cleared promptly to avoid clutter in the common corridors.
Transparent Communication – Throughout the project we kept the homeowner and the interior designer updated via WhatsApp, sharing progress photos and confirming each stage before proceeding. This real‑time dialogue ensured expectations were met and any on‑the‑spot adjustments could be approved instantly.
