Project Overview

The client engaged our team to remove an existing built-in wardrobe system from a bedroom in a mid-rise HDB flat at 812B Choa Chu Kang Ave 7, Singapore. The scope covered the full dismantling and disposal of the wardrobe unit - including shelving, hanging rails, side panels, and any wall-mounted backing boards. Coordination with the homeowner was handled via WhatsApp throughout the project, from initial site assessment through to completion, ensuring clear scheduling and real-time progress updates.

Technical Challenges

  1. Wall-integrated extraction - The built-in wardrobe was anchored directly into the surrounding wall structure with concealed fixings and adhesive sealant along its edges. Our team needed to carefully separate the unit from the plaster and masonry without causing cracks, gouges, or structural damage to the adjoining wall surfaces.

  2. Manoeuvring bulky panels in a confined space - Built-in wardrobes in HDB bedrooms typically span floor to ceiling, producing large, heavy panels and shelving sections once dismantled. The limited clearance in the bedroom and along the corridor required a planned sequence of disassembly to allow safe handling and removal of each component without damaging door frames, flooring, or other fixtures.

  3. Protecting existing finishes - The bedroom flooring and adjacent wall finishes needed to remain intact for the homeowner's upcoming renovation. Protective sheeting was laid down before work commenced, and care was taken during the prying and extraction process to limit scuffing, scratches, and debris impact on the surrounding surfaces.

Project Considerations

  • Safety protocols - All dismantling was carried out with appropriate PPE, and heavy wardrobe sections were handled by a two-person team to prevent injury and property damage.
  • Dust and debris control - Protective coverings were placed over the bedroom floor and any exposed furnishings. Debris was bagged progressively during the dismantling process rather than allowed to accumulate.
  • Noise and neighbour consideration - Work was scheduled within HDB-permitted renovation hours to minimise disturbance to neighbouring units in the block.
  • Preservation of surrounding finishes - Walls, flooring, and adjacent fixtures - including electrical points and light switches near the wardrobe - were checked and protected before extraction began.
  • WhatsApp communication - The homeowner received photo updates at key stages, including before dismantling commenced, during the extraction, and after final cleanup and disposal.

Results

  • The built-in wardrobe was fully dismantled and removed, leaving a clean, cleared wall surface ready for the homeowner's next phase of renovation work.
  • Surrounding wall plaster, flooring, and adjacent bedroom finishes were preserved without visible damage.
  • The homeowner was kept informed throughout via WhatsApp, with the project completed within the agreed schedule and with no unexpected issues.
