Project Overview

The client engaged HackingSG to remove a built-in raised timber platform (wood decking) from a residential HDB flat at 233 Compassvale Walk, Sengkang. The scope covered dismantling and disposal of the entire platform structure - including its supporting framework, fasteners, and any wall-mounted brackets - followed by general painting and touch-up work to restore affected wall surfaces. The unit is situated in a mid-rise HDB block, requiring careful coordination around shared corridors and neighbouring units. All scheduling and progress updates were handled directly with the homeowner via WhatsApp, ensuring clear communication throughout the project.

Technical Challenges

  1. Preserving the underlying floor surface. The timber platform had been constructed directly over the existing flooring. Dismantling the structure required controlled prying and cutting to avoid cracking or chipping the tiles beneath, particularly around edges where the platform met the walls.

  2. Removing embedded fasteners and structural supports. The platform's frame was secured with screws, brackets, and adhesive points anchored into the floor slab and adjacent walls. Each fixing point had to be extracted or cut flush to leave a clean, level surface suitable for the next phase of renovation.

  3. Dust and debris containment in a lived-in HDB block. Timber dismantling generates significant sawdust and particulate debris. Containment measures were necessary to prevent dust migration into common corridors and neighbouring units, while keeping the rest of the flat as clean as practicable during works.

Project Considerations

  • Worker safety. Proper PPE and hand tools were used throughout the dismantling process. Power tool use was managed to reduce the risk of kickback and accidental damage to surrounding finishes.
  • Dust and debris control. Protective sheeting was laid over exposed surfaces and doorways to contain dust within the work area. Debris was bagged progressively and removed from the unit at regular intervals.
  • Neighbour disruption minimisation. Works were scheduled within HDB renovation hours. Noise-intensive tasks such as prying and cutting were consolidated into defined time blocks to limit disturbance to adjacent residents.
  • Protection of existing finishes. Adjacent walls, door frames, and any fixtures not within the dismantling scope were shielded to prevent accidental scratches, dents, or paint damage during platform removal.
  • Transparent communication. The homeowner received photo updates and scheduling confirmations via WhatsApp at each stage - before commencement, during dismantling, and upon completion of painting touch-ups.

Results

  • The raised timber platform was fully dismantled and disposed of, leaving a clean and level floor surface ready for the homeowner's subsequent renovation works.
  • General painting and touch-up work restored wall surfaces where the platform had been affixed, eliminating visible fixing marks, adhesive residue, and paint inconsistencies.
  • The project was completed with minimal disruption to the homeowner and neighbouring units, with all communication and approvals managed through WhatsApp for convenience and traceability.
